The Majestic

Year: 2001
Director: Frank Darabont

Starring: Jim Carrey, Martin Landau, Laurie Holden, David Ogden Stiers

Synopsis:

Everything is going well for Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey). He is a Hollywood movie writer, and he's dating movie star Sandra Sinclair. When he is accused of being a communist, the studio blacklists him, and he is called to testify before Congress. He goes to a bar, drinks all night, and then drives up the California Coast. After driving off of a bridge into the river, he washes up on the beach the next morning with amnesia. He is found, and taken into the nearby small town of Lawson, which had recently lost 62 sons in WWII. Peter bears a striking resemblence to one of the sons who was missing in action, Luke Trimble. Because of the amnesia, Peter decides that he must be Luke. The entire town which had been in a depression because of the losses comes back to life with the return of one of their sons. Peter and Luke's father, Harry (Martin Landau) re-open the movie theater, The Majestic. During a showing of one of the movies written by Peter, his memory returns, just as the FBI tracks him down. After testifying to Congress, he has a choice, return to Hollywood and his old life, or return to a simpler life in Lawson.

Review:

This is definitely one of Jim Carrey's better movies. I like him better in serious and semi-serious roles, than the over the top comic roles, like in Ace Ventura or The Mask. The only real flaw I saw in this movie was that is was too long, I think it could have easily been shortened by 30-45 minutes. Even so, this movie did a good job at holding my attention. It may have been a bit predictable, but a lot of these kinds of movies are.

My Rating:
7/10
