Gettysburg

Year:1993
Director: Ronald F. Maxwell

Starring: Tom Berenger, Martin Sheen, Jeff Daniels, Stephen Lang

Synopsis:

This movie depicts the Battle of Gettysburg, Jul 1-3, 1863. The movie focuses particularly on Gen. James Longstreet (Tom Berenger), Col. Joshua Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels), and three of the major skirmishes of the battle... the opening battle, Little Round Top, and Pickett's Charge.

Review:

Be prepared for a long movie... over 4 hours. But, it is a very well done movie, with a good balance of dialogue and battle scenes. The movie focuses not only on the battle, but also on the commanders of both sides. This movie doesn't depict either side as the good guys or bad guys, each army was simply fighting for what they believed in... the Union army to preserve the nation, and the Confederate army for their states' rights to govern themselves as they wanted. The acting was good, although I thought Sam Elliott did overact a bit. This is a very good epic civil war movie, I plan on adding it to my collection along with the prequel, Gods and Generals.

My Rating:
8/10
