The Fifth Element

Year: 1997
Director: Luc Besson

Starring: Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Gary Oldman, Ian Holm, Chris Tucker

Synopsis:

In the year 2014, life on earth is threatened. Four stones, plus a fifth element (Milla Jovovich) are needed to prevent the destruction. Along with cab drive Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), she must find the stones, and return them to earth. Unfortunately, the stones are also being sought by the evil Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman). It turns into a race against time, to recover the stones, and return them to a temple on Earth to stop the destruction of life as we know it.

Review:

This movie never really takes itself seriously, yet it is better for this. It hovers on the fine line between drama and comedy. The settings and special effects are great, and really add to the movie. Gary Oldman is great as usual as the evil Mr. Zorg, and Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich are very good as well. The only thing I really didn't like was Chris Tucker's character, radio personality Ruby Rhod. Ruby Rhod is one of the most annoying characters I've ever seen in a movie, even worse than Jar Jar Binks. But in a way, Ruby was a good contrast to the understated character of Korben Dallas. Overall, I think this is a fun movie, with plenty of action, humor, and emotion.

My Rating:
8/10
