Down Periscope

Year: 1996
Director: David S. Ward

Starring: Kelsey Grammer, Lauren Holly, Rob Schneider, Bruce Dern, William H. Macy

Synopsis:

Lt. Cmdr. Tom Dodge (Kelsey Grammer) is a maverick naval officer looking for command of his own submarine. He is assigned as Captain of the USS Stingray, an obsolete diesel sub. With a misfit crew, he must evade a modern nuclear sub, and infiltrate two naval bases. If he succeeds, he will get command of a new nuclear submarine. But RAdm. Graham (Bruce Dern) doesn't feel that Dodge is worthy of a promotion, and will do what he can to stop him.

Review:

Sure, this movie follows the same formula as many others, the hero must take a group of misfits, and defy the odds to win. But even with the same old plot, Kelsey Grammer shines in this movie. The supporting cast does an exceptional job as well... Rob Schneider as the uptight XO of the Stingray, Toby Huss as the Stingray's electrician (who has obviously had a few too many volts pumped through him), and Lauren Holly as the less than confident dive officer. So what if the formula is a bit old and overused; Down Periscope is a surprisingly good movie.

My Rating:
8/10
