Charlie And The Chocolate Factory

Year: 2005
Director: Tim Burton

Starring: Johnny Depp, Freddie Highmore, Deep Roy

Synopsis:

Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore) is a poor boy, living in the shadow of a chocolate factory, run by the eccentric and reclusive Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp). When Wonka puts golden tickets into 5 candy bars, with the winners getting a tour of the factory, the whole world goes crazy looking for the tickets. Charlie finds one of the tickets, and he, along with 4 other children get to enter the world's greatest chocolate factory.

Review:

Obviously, people are going to try to compare this with the 1971 version of the movie. This was not a remake of the original movie, but another adaptation of the book by Roald Dahl. In some ways, this version wasn't quite as dark as the first one. Johnny Depp turned in another great performance as Willy Wonka, definitely quirkier than Gene Wilder, but not quite as crazy. The children all played their parts well, in some cases they played them even better than the children in the original. Having read the book (several times), I think Tim Burton did a wonderful job bringing this book to the big screen.

My Rating:
7/10
